At Liberate we LOVE books

A while back we posted on Instagram about our favourite books! And those books are so dear to our hearts that we wanted to share the words, the wisdom, the magic again on our blog :) At Liberate we LOVE books. Our work is deeply informed by what we read, so we wanted to post a few of our therapist’s favourites again.

Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino

- Loved by Amanda

“My pick is a collection of essays by Jia Tolentino. I love it for the smart and insightful self-reflection through dissecting the contexts that shape us and doing so with lucidity and precision. The book cover is also a work of art on it’s own which is always a great bonus!”

The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown

- Loved by Cat

“This little book is dog eared and underlined, my therapist gave it to me, it’s served as a guide in my life, not something to read once and put away but more of an ongoing friendship, a friend who offers periodic check-ins with tough questions & clear seeing, as well as deep nourishment and gentle care. Also loving that Brene is diving deep into the book this summer for its 10 year anniversary on her podcast Unlocking Us.”

Touching Enlightenment, Finding Realization in the Body by Reginald Ray

- Loved by Deidre

“This is one of my most cherished books about honouring the wisdom of the body. Years ago it called to me, and it has remained on old friend along my journey. I love it so much, I bought two copies (one to give to a friend). It is a gorgeous exploration of the quiet knowing of the body, through a Buddhist meditative lens (side note: you don’t need to know anything about Buddhism to find meaning in this book). It explores our shared dis/embodiment, how we got to be this way, and how we can shift from prioritizing our heads to listening to our bodies. It’s a meaty and juicy read, and oh so delicious.”

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

- Loved by Katherine

“This beautiful capsule of Indigenous wisdom and ways of life - on reciprocity, not taking more than one needs, and importantly, gratitude - by Robin Wall Kimmerer changed and continuously contributes to the morphing of my perception of my location and relationship to my surrounding as an inevitably relational one. Some of the most memorable pieces from Kimmerer'’s teachings include the rhythm and cycles of nature, an eternal representation of reciprocity; and our undeniable responsibility and part on this planet, not as colonizers, rather, guests.”
